I like to be seen & sweet KLR

This photo show two things, well maybe three1. It shows me reinstalling the lower spark plug (dual plugged, Dyna Ignt) after I put anti-seize on the plugs threads. I was lucky that the plug remained in the NKG cap and did not bounce down the Manitoulin Island blacktop after the plug blew out and hit my toe.

2. You can see the additional lights that I installed on the rear of my RS (clic photo and it will enlarge, You will see that I could not find my center punch). I had the larger plate mount made for my R100/7 fakes S/GS but it does not need more lights (page down) so I installed a 5 LED running light, the larger 10 LED brake light below my license plate and a LED 1157 replacement bulb. See http://www.superbrightleds.com/ for information.

3. The nice KLR 650 with Army Surplus mermite cans for panniers. It is a sweet motorbike

BMW motorcycle electric stuff

.
If you are going to begin work on airhead BMW engines spend $5.00 for a hardened alternator removal bolt. Stories abound about the fellow who uses soft steel and it gets peened over and hard to remove.

My RS developed a leak in the underside of the gas tank, a small seep, but a leak non the less. It was due to a home made coil bracket rubbing over time on the underside of the tank. I removed the coil (above) and I was removing the coil from the bracket so I could grind off the offending corner and reinstall. when the bolt came loose the coil slipped out of my hand and fell to the ground striking the concrete directly on the front wire hole shattering same.
Ninety ($90.00) for a new coil, ouch.

Nice big LED tail light
.
I will work over a workbench in the future, not as far to fall.
lesson learned

on the road Head Gasket repair, Hanover PA

If you look closely you can see the ruptured head gasket just below the head which we are looking right into. I noticed a slight puffing out of the seam which ruptured into a spray of oil just as I was pulling into this shop. I ordered the parts overnighted from Bob's BMW, Jessup MD and checked into a days inn down the street.
I went to a Tractor Supply store to but some materials that I would need, the most important was the yellow tarp. I thought that dropped parts would be a snap to fine on a tarp and it was a lifesaver I like BMW airhead motorcycles

BMW airhead head gaskets

I blew a head gasket in Hanover, PA and fixed it in the parking lot of an Asian Motorcycle dealer.
It took me a leisurely 2.5 hours in the mornings hot sun. The shops mechanics asked me why I tour on such an old machine my response was, "It would take you two hours to remove the plastic to get to the head of the modern machines". The were nodding in agreement when I rode away. After further thought it was my fault that the head gasket failed. I neglected to re-torque the heads after I had the engine rebuilt. It has been about 1,600 miles since I replaced the head gasket. I need to tighten the heads, and remember never, ever tighter that 26 ft. lbs.
